Many travelers have had great success finding lower flight rates these days. In fact, rates seem to drop more each day, enabling travelers to find the deepest discounts possible. But are these discounts really that much cheaper given the additional charges that lurk in hidden fees?

Once considered scandalous, fees for baggage, as well as surcharges, are starting to become a normal addition with most flights. Holiday flights are still being sacked with $10 surcharges. And baggage charges aren’t just for extra baggage anymore; some airlines are charging for bringing one piece of luggage on a flight. The remedy for this? Wearing layers and carrying a large purse.

Fees for unaccompanied minors have significantly increased (perhaps in the spirit of self-pity following the film with the same title). From changing seating arrangements to in-flight meals (which aren’t exactly scrumptious fare you’d pay for on the ground), many services that were once free now have hefty price tags attached to them.

The worst part of it all is that customers can’t see these fees when they buy their tickets; they’re all added in later. So when you’re getting a deal, keep in mind that the deal could end up being as much–if not more–than a standard ticket once all of the extras are added in.

With the cost of flying as high as it is, many people are avoiding it altogether if they can these days. But sometimes you just have to fly–and for many people, it’s a frequent part of life no matter the cost. So how can you do it without breaking the bank?

Here are some tips for traveling on the cheap.

Buy tickets in advance. Some fares will be lower if you buy them three weeks in advance.

Buy tickets during the week. Skip making purchases between Friday and Monday morning, as air fare tends to increase on Thursday evenings as well as over the weekend. Usually prices roll back by Monday afternoon.

Don’t use airports far from home. Save some gas or cab fare and stay close to home.

Shop around. Don’t settle for the first price you see; visit multiple sites and find out what the lowest fare really is. That said, book your best price quickly, as it is liable to change fast.

Buy more than one ticket. If multiple tickets equal a discount and you’re traveling with family or a colleague, buy your tickets together and save some money.

Use air passes or frequent flyer miles. Make use of any discount you’ve got!

Leave your extra stuff at home. If you can get by with a single piece of luggage, do it. Save yourself the extra fees.

Bid on ticket prices. Set a fee for your ticket at Priceline.com or a similar site that you are willing to pay and see if you can get one that way.

Embrace the layover. If you don’t mind having one, you could save some money.
